Shaw Island, 1/8/2016

We are now happily sitting in a very quiet bay on the North West of Shaw Island, approx 5 miles South of the world famous Hamilton Island. Val and I anchored here 7 years ago on our way south to our new life in Melbourne.

We prepared the boat this morning before heading off to a briefing on what to expect and where to go on our way yo Darwin, arriving at the end of the month. Apparently it's not as difficult a trip as the charts make it look, I hope that's  right! We then cast off our warps at about noon and headed out, but only after quite a delay caused by red traffic lights. These flash red when there are any shipping movements in the commercial port area, and somebody forgot to switch them off. We got out eventually after a pointed radio call. The rest of the boats will follow us in the next couple of days.

On our way north there were the usual whale displays. Of course there was no wind and so we motored for 6 more hours. On the way Shin caught a beautiful Spanish Mackerel. It was filleted on deck and then this evening we ate a small part of it as Sushi, Sashimi and other beautiful Japanese dishes. No fishing tomorrow as we have more than enough for several meals. The fish was about a metre long and about 6 kilos. A fine healthy looking specimen.

The whole operation was photographed and I will post them tomorrow when we get into decent internet coverage at Airlie Beach.

We hope to do a brief trial dive in the morning, just to set up our weights, etc and then head to Abell Point Marina for the night.
