What a sad sight this resort is. Some of the buildings appear to have been refurbished since Cyclone Yasi in 2011, but the majority are missing large parts of their roofs, and the insides ruined. The supporting pillars are all sand blasted on one side and any loose doors, such as power meter boxes, are ripped off.
The campsite is still in use with people staying there. The toilets are there, working but not maintained. The jetty is in excellent condition, presumably rebuilt as it looks new.
Photos to follow when they come back from being developed!
We left our anchorage this morning after a really peaceful night, although when Peter went up into the cockpit and looked behind the boat, there was a pair of eyes and a V wake 20 metres away. The crocodiles really do live there. That didn't put off 4 fishermen in a tinny from standing up and fishing just off the mangroves. Rather them than me.
On the way north out of the passage we passed Port Hinchinbrook. Val and I moored in the in 2008 and it was a lovely spot. Yasi took care of the marina and the surrounding infrastructure, as well as all the boats and houses there. Such a shame.
Having motor sailed all day we anchored in Brammo Bay for tonight at 1.30, just in time for lunch. This was followed by a trip ashore in the dinghy. The new to me dinghy is aluminium hulled and is far better that the all inflatable previous model.
Fishing competition is still a dead head at nil all.
We leave here at 5.00am tomorrow and should be in Cairns ' Marlin Marina in the afternoon. I have booked 4 nights there and hope some of the other boats will leave with us. We will have 2 weeks to reach Darwin, about 1300 miles through all new areas to me and Peter, but Shin has done this twice already. We will have time for some exploring along the way.
Nasty island on the way into Dunk Resort.
Some of the Dunk Resort damage.
More of the damage above, and Shin with his coconut below.
