We arrived here on Tuesday after a quite pleasant 2 1/2 day sail and motor. Speeds up to 12 knots with the current, and the promised SW winds kept away.
This is one of the worst harbours I have ever visited! First night we were tied up to a quay wall, there did not appear to be any room on the marina. During the night we chewed through warps and were pitched and tossed by the swell. In the morning we were shown a space on the marina and moved, with difficulty, in the strong wind. There is now some damage to the transom, another job for Cape Town to do.
This port is the major outlet for magnesium ore in powder form, so guess where the dust ends up! The boat, ropes and us are all turning black. I arranged for the boat to be washed this morning, prior to leaving tomorrow morning. She is white again and the wind has switched around so that the dust is blowing out to sea.
The marina was destroyed 8 years ago and rebuilt. It looks about 50 years old and needs a lot of work.
We will not be back needless to say, and cannot recommend stopping here.
Next stop is either Simonstown or Cape Town, depending on weather and progress.
