After a disturbed night on anchor in Bowling Green Bay we left at 07.50, heading to Townsville, the biggest town in tropical Queensland.
Just after we all settled into our beds last night, there was a loud bang. All of us shot up but couldn't find anything wrong. Maybe something in the water hit the hull, although it didn't sound like that. I think the pile of anchor chain fell over in the rough conditions. Anyway the boat never moved all night.
We motor sailed for the first few hours to get out of the huge bay, about 30 miles across. Then off with the motor and some lovely sailing into Townsville. I lost the entry channel on the way in but it didn't matter as there was plenty of water. On the way around one headland there was a whale standing on its head for ages, with a small one, presumably a calf, with it.
We tied up onto a marina berth as instructed. It was a bit tight to manouver inside the entry to the pen but we got in OK .We found Shanti on her pen, unfortunately Jacquie the owner and round the World solo sailor is in Brisbane now. I also found another WARC boat is here too, but on a different marina.
I went to the club office to sign in and pay up for the berth. For the first time ever I was charged extra as live aboards. Where do the office people think casual visitors would stay? Anyway the boat has been hosed off by Shin and the air con is running away so we'll get value from being live aboards!
We've all been off looking at nearby parts of the city. It's full of old buildings from the 1860s on. Most are in great condition, but some definitely are not.
The yacht club here is new, thanks to Cyclone Yasi in 2011 and very friendly. We had a small lunch in the bar and will dine there tonight as well. Then off again at about 07.00 tomorrow for Lucinda and the Hinchinbrook Channel.
