Day 2 on the Pacific

Monday 10th March

We are now 190 miles SW of the Galapagos Islands.

Last night we did some motoring due to light and variable winds off Isla Isabela. It was a very confused sea due to a strong south going tide between the islands, and with the winds the boat was all over the place. Paul had the misfortune to be on watch at the time. It also poured rain during the night.

At the moment we have just finished our dinner - pasta - and are getting set up for the night. All is well although there is a torn section on the jib. It is the cover for the leech line. This is used to tension the trailing edge of the sail to stop it flaping. We are going to repair it with tape when the wind dies down. As we are doing 7.5 to 8 knots all the time, we really don't want to stop - especially as our our weatherman says to get south of 4 degrees south due to possible westerly winds on Thursday, with scattered thunderstorms, whereas south of this there should be good trade winds.

We have found the drinking water from Puerto Ayora has a lousy taste, so we will use it up in showers etc. and we are drinking from the watermaker tank - this tastes really good. We thought the Puerto Ayora water might have been suspect as we had read about this problem in books.

It is still quite warm but certainly fresher now and we expect the evenings will be easier to sleep in as we go further south.

Storms are predicted to peak @ 3.00am. I will keep you posted - not too bad here south @ the moment (but still strong gusts)as long as we have power,I don't mind! Andrew said that in the west that the mean speeds are 95mph & he has never seen that before!
Met office just now 12.00 is predicting gale to violant storm force winds with snow on high grounds - scarey !
