Animals galore...

Thursday 27th February

Hugh - I've just come on watch, 10 o'c. Val woke me a few minutes early as a bird had flown into the bimini with a loud bang. She thought it had hurt itself. I picked it up and threw it out the side of the bimini and away it flew. There just wasn't enough runway in the cockpit for it to take off. No doubt it was stunned as well. We have seen several of these flying around during the day. They are about 300mm wingspan and fly almost like swallows. The bird felt very soft and warm, and made no attempt to defend itself by biting or flappong. Maybe its from the Galapagos. There are also 3 or 4 of the swallow tail gannets with us again this evening. The last lot, last night, left their calling cards all over the foredeck. We'll clean it up later.

One of the leading boats reported a dead whale in the water on the route to the islands, but we had already passed the position without seeing it. They said it was about 15m long. Val was wondering if the group we saw yesterday had anything to do with the dead one. Who knows.
