Wednesday 12th December
On watch at 03.30, having taken over from Val. It's rolly and warm at the moment, around 30 degrees and 50% humidity - everything feels damp and sticky. 488 miles to go, and arrival still predicted for Friday.
There is a warning of a possible tropical revolving storm around Puerto Rico. It's not yet formed and is moving westwards at 15 kts, so should not be a problem. Also, we have continued a little further south to avoid any possible danger.
We have 2 half sized jibs up with our remaining pole on one of them. This pole is being very well looked after as we would be much slower without it, so very conservative rig at all times. Sail changes on the foredeck are carried out by Barry & myself (Hugh). I'm getting quite good up there as the rolls have been with us for so long now. A lot of the boat logs from people who have done many ARCs are saying this is the worst ever for weather and sea conditions!! The sea during the day looks like the north Atlantic with constant confused waves/swells and lots of white water blowing around. There are also constant wind shifts to cater for.
Anyway, the keyboard keeps shifting around under my fingers and so I have to keep going back and correcting the worst of the text errors!! So, I'll sign off now before I have more correcting to do.
